Exciting Progress in Healthcare Industry: Lean Six Sigma Improving Processes at Hong Kong Children’s Hospital

Honored to be invited to visit the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, to discuss with elite members of the healthcare industry how Lean Six Sigma can effectively improve the hospital’s processes and quality. Several participants provided feedback that this training has changed their mindset and allowed them to approach problem-solving from different perspectives, resulting in significant benefits.

During the training, Dr. TONG presented a challenging issue that children’s hospitals worldwide may face, which is the precision of the dilution or reduction of medication for child intake. Due to the difference in body weight between adults and children, medications intended for adults need to be reduced or diluted before administering them to pediatric patients. Therefore, ensuring the precision of the dilution process is a challenge faced by children’s hospitals worldwide.

Dr. TONG introduced the Poka-Yoke method from Six Sigma with these healthcare professionals and discussed how to apply it to their daily operations, encouraging them to face and overcome the difficult challenges presented by pediatric care. Now, we believe all Hong Kong parents can rest easier knowing that Hong Kong Children’s Hospital has gained mastery in preventing errors in medication dosage for all children.
